Big Freedia bounces to Berlin

25. März 2015

Big Freedia, “the queen diva” of New Orleans bounce – a regional style of hip-hop known for its call-and-response vocals and high sexual energy – is currently touring Europe. Her Berlin stop is this Saturday, March 28, when she and her dancers will take the stage at the Berghain Kantine.

Because of New Orleans’ long history of LGBT acceptance and drag culture, bounce music and its many trans* performers have had a thriving scene since the 90s, disproving the perception that hip-hop is inherently homophobic. Following the displacement caused by the disastrous Hurricane Katrina in 2005, bounce music seeped into the consciousness of a wider national audience.

Big Freedia has become one of the genre’s biggest reps, gaining popularity with her reality TV show Queen of Bounce, collaborations with RuPaul and last year’s album Just Be Free. Song titles like “Turn da Beat Up” and “Where my Queens At” give a good indication of what to expect from her show, presented by Pansy (Drag Race) and Sampson (CherrYO!kie). Local DJ support comes from Black Cracker and Dreea. Time to brush up on your twerking moves.
