Inside Berlin’s Sex-Positive Underground
Berlin has always been a laboratory of desire.
For more than a century, this city has shaped global conversations around sexuality, identity, pleasure and resistance. From the lesbian cabarets of the 1920s to underground BDSM communities in divided Berlin, sexuality here has never been separate from politics.
For over a decade, sociologist and certified sex educator Jeff Mannes has explored and documented this world — not as spectacle, but as culture.

His immersive experiences connect Berlin’s radical past with its living present.
Where It All Began: Berlin’s Queer & Trans History Tour traces more than 150 years of resistance, nightlife and identity. Guests encounter the legacy of Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science, early trans pioneers, lesbian clubs, drag culture and the fight against Paragraph 175. Through archival material and multimedia elements, history becomes intimate and tangible.
For those who want to go further, Kinky Taboos: Berlin’s Forbidden Desires opens doors rarely accessible to outsiders.

Participants receive private daytime access to Atrium — Berlin’s largest dominatrix and BDSM studio with more than 15 fully equipped fetish rooms; Böse Buben — a long-standing gay fetish institution in Schöneberg; and Insomnia — one of Europe’s most influential sex-positive clubs.
Midway through the experience, guests join an intimate moderated conversation with Dominique, dominatrix and club owner, discussing power dynamics, consent culture, stigma and the realities of erotic labor.
The journey culminates in a private live BDSM performance at Atrium. Two professional sex workers present a consensual, explicit encounter centered on dominance, submission and erotic power play. The performance may include restraint, impact play, control and ritualized intimacy. Each show is unique, artistically curated and grounded in professional boundaries and clear consent.

Throughout, Jeff Mannes provides cultural and ethical context — connecting underground practice with Berlin’s social history.
For open-minded adults seeking depth, intimacy and rare access, these tours offer more than stories. They offer entry into a world built on trust.
