Exhibition opening
The Schwules Museum* (don’t look for a footnote, the asterisk is part of their name) is showing a documentary artist exhibition about the “corrective“ rapes of lesbians in Cape Town, hate crimes that provide a constant everyday threat. On their research trip, Brazilian photographer Renata Har and Irish journalist Conor Creighton met activists/ artists Dineo Madwayi and Des’re Higa, who – also victims themselves – deal with this culture of violence in their work. Their collaboration has resulted in this exhibition (the title of which translates to “If the Sand Could Speak“), which deliberately avoids a voyeuristic approach in the treatment of the everyday life situation of lesbians in Cape Town.
The only museum in Germany explicitly dedicated to gay, lesbian and queer topics. Exhibitions, events and art installations reveal history and contribute to current queer dialogs.
