Screening of films with Susan Sontag

A small tremor went through America’s cultural landscape in 1964 when Susan Sontag (pictured) published Notes on Camp, an essay on her gay friends’ inclinations toward excessive, theatrical art. In a new, provocative form the author wrote about low culture and style, about sci-fi trash and pornography, channeling the zeitgeist of the 60s. The retrospective event Susan Sontag Revisited starts tonight at Arsenal, bringing her relatively unknown work as a filmmaker into focus. On Jan. 29 and 30 there will be a symposium at ICI Berlin, in which figures like Hanna Schygulla will read Sontag’s output and gender scholar Andrea B. Braidt will discuss the essay AIDS and Its Metaphors.
