Screening Derek Jarman's 1991 film to celebrate the premiere of the Deutsche Oper's new staging of Edward II
The Deutsche Oper has brought composer Andreas Lorenzo Scartazzini on board for their new production of Edward II, set to premiere next month. The opera includes motifs from the 16th-Century namesake piece by Christopher Marlowe. The Deutsche Oper has organized an elaborate side program as fanfare, and tonight’s prelude is a screening at MonGay: Derek Jarman’s film adaptation of Marlowe’s play is a postmodern masterpiece from 1991, starring Steven Waddington as the gay king and Tilda Swinton as his queen, plus a guest appearance from Annie Lennox performing a Cole Porter tune.
The premier movie theater of the GDR is magnificently built, a perfect setting not just for watching movies but also for parties. The weekly MonGay series presents current queer films and also cult classics.
