Spike Lee has remained a leading figure of black cinema since the 80s, using his work to call out racist structures. His new joint, BlacKkKlansman, is a thriller-comedy set in the 70s: as the first black detective in Colorado Springs, Ron Stallworth and his Jewish coworker try to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan, posing as a vile racist on the phone. Both get confronted by an atmosphere of hatred, sexism and homophobia. Peppered with elements of blaxploitation, the film nevertheless points to our present day, the political shift to the right and the leadership position of Trump.
The premier movie theater of the GDR is magnificently built, a perfect setting not just for watching movies but also for parties. The weekly MonGay series presents current queer films and also cult classics.
