A Moroccan queer story
Friends Jaafar and Soundouss arrive at the vacation villa of Jaafar's American lover Jonathan in Cabo Negro, northern Morocco. Jonathan is supposed to follow shortly, but when he never shows up, the two must find ways to pass the time without drawing attention to their presence in the villa. Amid palm trees, beaches, and markets, new bonds form and intimate encounters occur as the scorching hot summer slowly descends upon the country.
Following his 2012 debut Salvation Army, acclaimed Moroccan author Abdallah Taïa presents his second feature film, Cabo Negro. Once again, he depicts queer identities in Moroccan society with a tender gaze and a penchant for longing in his calm and atmospheric style. As a supporting film to Cabo Negro, ALFILM is showing Taïa's short film Cairo Streets, which was released in 2025 but was shot in 2007 on standard low-resolution video cassettes. In the 19-minute film, a young man searches for his missing lover. As he wanders through alleys and shops, he encounters various residents of Cairo, including Youssef Chahine in a brief guest appearance shortly before his death in 2008.
