Stefan Herheims Neuproduktion bei den Barocktagen 2026
This extremely queer opera by Francesco Cavalli, dating from 1651, was already a smash hit at the Staatsoper in the 1990s, conducted at the time by René Jacobs. Now, the piece—which centers on the daring amorous adventures of ancient gods—returns to Berlin as a transfer of the new production by the acclaimed gay director Stefan Herheim, which recently premiered in Vienna. Christina Pluhar conducts, and Vera-Lotte Boecker takes on the title role; Milan Siljanov sings the part of the restless king of the gods, Jupiter—who seduces Calisto by disguising himself as the goddess Diana. The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin provides the musical accompaniment. A must-see for all fans of Baroque LGBTIQ* opera.

Die von König Friedrich II. in Auftrag gegebene Staatsoper unter den Linden inszeniert auch heute noch eher traditionell und bietet damit, auch aufgrund der fantastischen Lage zwischen Humbold-Universität und Gendarmenmarkt, musikalische und architektonische Zeitreisen in die Ära des Alten Fritz'. Von 2010 bis 2017 wurde das Opernhaus für 400 Millionen Euro saniert und mit 1356 Sitzplätze wiedereröffnet.
