Broadway hit about 9/11

The successful musical Irene Sankoff and David Hein tells the story of 38 airplanes and 7,000 passengers who, as an immediate consequence of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, were unable to land in the United States because the airspace had been closed — and were instead diverted to the remote town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada. With music inspired by Irish folk traditions, the show tells a series of personal stories: that of a shaken female pilot, of the local townspeople — and of the two gay Kevins, whose relationship falls apart in the aftermath of these experiences.

With its life-affirming and uplifting message, the show, presented in an effective yet minimalist production, made its way from New York across the United States, to Canada, and to London’s West End. In Germany, Theater Regensburg recently staged the belated German premiere in a production by gay director Sebastian Ritschel. Now Stageink (Verband Berliner Amateur Bühnen e.V.) is bringing the show to us — with a live band and many highly dedicated amateur musical performers. It could be very moving, because Come From Away is wonderful — and not just because of the Kevins!
