Goethe’s Faust 1 for the Pop Music Generation
In this one-woman-plus-puppet lip-sync show, Bridge Markland constantly switches between the roles of Mephisto, Faust, and Gretchen. She portrays additional characters using hand puppets. Goethe’s text is enhanced by snippets of pop music: Roy Orbison sings "Pretty Woman" when Faust first lays eyes on Gretchen, and Elvis turns up the heat for the inexperienced girl with "Falling in Love"—even the warnings from the doctors ("Men are pigs—don't trust them") are of no avail.
