In a very personal account, Thomas Sparr describes how the Stonewall Riots changed the world, while also specifically asking what the key turning points in LGBTIQ* history in Germany were—independent of Stonewall. In doing so, he provides, among other things, a history of Berlin institutions such as the Schwules Museum and their groundbreaking exhibitions Eldorado, Goodbye to Berlin, and Homosexualität_en. Refreshingly, he raises many critical questions, including about the current understanding of “queer” versus the older gay and lesbian movement. You don’t have to agree with his answers, but they are definitely worth reflecting on.
