Die Geschichte der lesbischen Pionierinnen Lotte Hahm und Käthe Fleischmann
This brand new musical by writers Melissa and Fani Suan-Baum and composer Theresa “Terry” Zanon transports audiences to the world of Berlin’s lesbian bars in the 1920s, following the love story of the legendary Lotte Hahm and Käthe Fleischmann over several decades, through to the post-war years. The show will (finally!) feature a genuine seduction scene between two women (“Käthe, only you!”) – something that remains rare, if not almost unheard of, in German-language musical theatre. Kiara Brunken takes on one of the leading roles, while the other will be revealed as a surprise shortly before the premiere – and it’s one worth getting very (!) excited about. Also appearing is the D-Dur-Dykes* choir.
The musical explores chosen family, but also the “backstabbing” that can occur within the FLINTA* community, as the creators told SIEGESSÄULE in an interview.
After its four performances at SO36, they hope to bring the show to London and launch it onto the international stage. The production is produced by Giuseppina Lettieri of the Spinnboden Archive. The German dialogue translation is by Olivia Schaaf, who has previously written about lesbian musicals in the essay collection Breaking Free: Die wunderbare Welt des LGBTQ-Musicals.

SO36 has been a music hotspot in Kreuzberg since the 70s, at least in the part of the district formerly known by its postal code of Süd-Ost 36. Its profile has changed over the decades, but it's still home to long-established events such as the Middle-Eastern club night Gayhane as well as punk concerts.
