Film and discussion

The DEFA feature film *Coming Out* (1989), directed by Heiner Carow, tells the story of Philipp (Matthias Freihof), a young teacher in East Berlin who increasingly grapples with his own homosexuality. While initially involved in a relationship with his colleague Tanja, an encounter with a young man named Matthias plunges him into an inner conflict, prompting him to begin questioning his sexual identity. The film traces this personal journey as it unfolds amidst societal expectations, prejudices, and the desire for self-acceptance. Historically, *Coming Out* is regarded as the only feature film produced in the GDR to place homosexuality at its very center. Its premiere took place on November 9, 1989, at the Kino International in East Berlin—on the very night the Berlin Wall fell. This coincidence imbued the film with a unique symbolic significance: while a political system was collapsing outside, a societal taboo was being confronted inside the cinema. An event presented by ZDF *aspekte*, KVOST, and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, in cooperation with nGbK and nbStudios.
