Musical theatre

Musical, grand opera, socio-critical broadside, song recital—morning, noon, and night, right through to the new day. For five or six theater lunatics and one clever pianist. A sperm whale is no small animal. 100 tons of blubber, flesh, and fat—utterly unmanageable for a standard theatrical operation. But theater people are inventive. That is why, for our grand opera *The Song of the Sperm Whale*, we went ahead and invented an entirely new venue. Open-air—and thus accessible even to marine mammals. For without a sperm whale, there is no opera. And so, behind the Deutsches Theater, an orchestra pit is being dug. An arena is being built beneath the stars. Verona. Melodies for the millions. Choirs, supernumerary choirs, auxiliary choirs—fishermen’s choirs! Kaufmann and Netrebko—at the very least! Water basins and fountains on stage; fire, pyrotechnics, and 20 tons of German sewage sludge… what was that for again?
