Stefan Herheim's Wagner production is back
This Wagner production by the openly gay star director Stefan Herheim (developed together with the house’s likewise gay dramaturge, Jörg Königsdorf) premiered under difficult conditions during the COVID era and was not particularly well received by the press. Nevertheless, it was released on DVD. Now the tetralogy is returning live once again, with a new cast, but once more under the direction of the outgoing General Music Director Donald Runnicles. This time, Jordan Shanahan takes on the role of the chief of the gods, while Trine Møller sings Brünnhilde. There will be two runs in May; in the second, Catherine Foster will perform Brünnhilde. A major event for all queer Wagnerians!

A good 100 years ago, in the then still independent area of Charlottenburg, the Deutsche Oper was founded in the name of modern music theater, offering full visibility of the stage from every seat. The opera house stayed true to this tradition of citizenry when Fritz Bornemann's new building opened in 1961.
