The Halle-born George Frideric Handel rose to become one of the world’s most famous composers after moving to London—and is now regarded as one of the most important LGBTIQ figures in classical music. While the Komische Oper Berlin is currently presenting his 1745 oratorio Belshazzar, the Deutsche Oper Berlin is staging his popular opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto, which premiered in London about 20 years earlier. The production is directed by the gay Sir David McVicar and is a transfer from the Glyndebourne Festival. Audiences in Berlin can therefore currently enjoy a double dose of “queer Handel.”

A good 100 years ago, in the then still independent area of Charlottenburg, the Deutsche Oper was founded in the name of modern music theater, offering full visibility of the stage from every seat. The opera house stayed true to this tradition of citizenry when Fritz Bornemann's new building opened in 1961.
