Kim de l’Horizon’s new play is a rewriting of the fairy tale of the Little Mermaid. It is a story about the longing for a different body, the dream of true love, and the price exacted by social ascent. On its fifteenth birthday, the little mermaid is finally allowed to swim to the ocean’s surface—and discovers something monstrous: a "Marcoman"! Beautiful, and standing on straight legs. Immediately, the mermaid is seized by wild desires—part lust, part a yearning to be different. In exchange for this new norm and a better life, it renounces its fluidity, its shimmering splendor of scales, and its great glittering tail—only to pay the price in this new world with invisibility and silence.
