Performative reflections on Madonna
Coincidence or destiny? Choreographer Ea Torrado shares more than just a birthday with American pop icon Madonna - their biographies also reveal striking parallels: early steps in classical ballet and modern dance, a strict Catholic upbringing, and a constant struggle for self-determination. In her solo piece "Brown Madonna", Torrado takes this proximity - as well as the differences - to Madonna as the starting point for a living ethnography. Against the backdrop of the intertwined forces of colonialism, Catholic iconography, and global pop culture, she interrogates how women in Philippine society are conditioned to be spectacular givers: mothers, martyrs, entertainers, and saints. Together with visual artist and fashion designer Leeroy New, she creates a spirited DIY spectacle - a radical quest for liberation through embodiment. At the same time, she addresses the ceaseless labor of cultivating an idealized self, the drive to over-perform, and the dream of earning a living through one’s art - along with the fatigue, financial insecurity, and loneliness that accompany it.
