Portrait of the 1st Christopher Street Day in Russia, 1992
In Russia, lesbians are called “pink” and gay men “light blue.” “White
Nights” is a natural phenomenon in which it barely gets dark at night in June, a phenomenon typically observed in St. Petersburg.
For Queer History Month, we are screening a documentary capturing the spirit of optimism following Perestroika.
As part of the lesbian and gay cultural exchange from 1992 to 1995 in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Berlin, Russia’s first Pride parade took place. Organized by the Tchaikovsky Foundation, Mahide Lein, and Andreas Strohfeldt. Footage will be shown from the three-day event, which was attended by 55 activists and artists from Berlin. The documentary vividly captures the excitement of the first kisses in the thrilling twilight, exuberant dancing, and the extensive German-Russian cultural, workshop, and film program.
