Else Runge – Resistance within a National-Conservative Neighbourhood

During the Weimar Republic, Karlshorst tended to lean towards national conservatism, a sentiment reflected in voting patterns. This made Karlshorst something of an exception in Lichtenberg, where the traditional voting pattern was actually left-wing. Nevertheless, there was resistance to National Socialism in Karlshorst as well. The communist Else Runge lived with her family on Junker-Jörg-Straße. She was active in underground communist circles until the end of the war and supported those being persecuted. On Hönower Straße there was a camp housing over 500 people, including women, who were forced to perform hard labour in the arms industry.
