A traffic accident as dramatic as a soap opera: INNOCENCE is based on the
Susurluk scandal, a notorious car accident in Turkey in the 1990s that led to the discovery of criminal connections between state institutions, the drug mafia, and structures of a state within a state. Göksu Kunak reflects on a policy of concealment and cover-ups, using the car accident as a metaphor for a corrupt patriarchal political system. INNOCENCE is an attempt to trace the genealogy of corruption in the country, the oppression of minorities, and the atrocities committed by Western imperialism against Turkey and the Middle East/Southwest Asia.
