Many consider the military to be one of the last refuges of unadulterated masculinity. Virile rituals of submission are cultivated in the barracks courtyard. This makes the career of Anastasia Biefang, the first openly transgender person in a leadership position in the history of the German Armed Forces, all the more surprising. As a lieutenant colonel, Biefang commands 780 soldiers in an information technology battalion in Storkow, Brandenburg. In his deliberately unemotional documentary “Ich bin Anastasia” (I am Anastasia), Thomas Ladenburger, together with co-cinematographer Elfi Mikesch, accompanies Biefang's transition to womanhood and follows her as she takes up her post as commander.
