Over two days, the Berlin-based jazz pianist and teacher will present her latest album, which she recorded with three vocalists. Among them is Berlin gay jazz icon Michael Schiefel, who, like Hülsmann and drummer Heinrich Köbberling, is a member of the Jazz Institute faculty. While I Was Away pays tribute to several queer musicians with songs by the lesbian Brazilian duo Rosanna & Zélia and the bisexual folk punk singer Ani DiFranco.
