Arsenal is dedicating a three-day program to former staff member Alf Bold, who would have turned 80 on July 23. Alf Bold died of AIDS-related complications in 1993. In the early 1970s, he recognized a particular need to promote and champion experimental film. The 16mm programs he presented in a side room of the cinema bore a distinctive signature, strongly shaped by his love of music. In 1982, he spent a year in New York directing the program for the Collective for Living Cinema, where he deepened his ties to the avant-garde and underground scenes. At the same time, he expanded the Arsenal film collection to reflect this focus. As an actor, he appeared in films by Straub/Huillet, Rudolph Thome, and Ulrike Ottinger, among others.
