In the bluegrass songs of her second album, Strange Medicine, Montreal-based queer folk singer and banjo player Kaïa Kater explores her father's migration from the Caribbean island nation of Grenada to Canada in the early 1980s. The 32-year-old's songs, delivered with a jazzy timbre, are highly regarded not only by fellow musicians like Allison Russell and Taj Mahal, but are also regularly featured in auteur films.
