Whether it's the axe fuzz gracefully captured by ex-lover Robert Mapplethorpe on the “Easter” cover, the homosexual adventure described in the song “Gloria” or her pioneering work in terms of unpolished female vocals in general - the heteronormative rock poet has long been a staple in the queer community. She was inspired not least by the gay poet Arthur Rimbaud, whom she memorialized in 2016 with her daughter Jesse Paris Smith and the Soundwalk Collective. Together with her band, she is now celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of her debut album “Horses”, which was also groundbreaking in terms of cover art.
