"Beauty is secondary"—such is the instruction at the beginning of the fourth movement of the *Sonata for Solo Viola, Op. 25 No. 1*, by Paul Hindemith. This directive could just as easily have originated with Dore Hoyer—expressionist dancer, choreographer, and creator of the dance cycle *Afectos Humanos*—with which Pol Pi has been working for ten years. Both works consist of five short, expressive solos and were created under the immense pressure of suffering within totalitarian regimes. Drawing upon letters written by both artists, Pol Pi constructs a dialogue between their voices and the political situation in Brazil under Bolsonaro. Word, music, and movement converge to form an intimate—and simultaneously political—trio. Furthermore, since Lula’s election in 2023 in his native Brazil, Pol Pi has invited a local artist to join in performing the final movement of the sonata and the cycle’s concluding dance, "Love."
