German composer Hans Werner Henze (1926–2012) was one of the few who lived openly as a gay man in the 1960s and 1970s – and addressed this theme as much as possible in his compositions. Vladimir Jurowski presents ‘Voices’ with the Unitedberlin ensemble, a collection of songs for two voices and instrumental groups. From the hopelessness of Cuban poets (“Los poetas cubanos ya no sueñan”) to Brecht’s struggle for liberation (“Keiner oder alle”) to the African-American civil rights movement (“The Distant Drum”), the song collection reflects Henze’s political thinking and social commitment.
