Soul, Jazz, Poetry
Just in time for the 100th birthday of gay writer and Black civil rights activist James Baldwin, who died in 1987, lesbian jazz bassist and singer released “No More Water” in 2024, a concept album that stylistically oscillates between soul, gospel, and spoken art, which draws primarily on Baldwin's essay “The Fire Next Time,” but also incorporates quotes from Audre Lorde. The brilliant-sounding Pierre Boulez Hall now offers the opportunity to experience Meshell's complex work live.
