The Salzburg Festival production later transferred to Berlin, placing Max Hopp center stage to deliver the spoken dialogue for all the opera singers. The result is unconventional, bringing Offenbach’s original can-can scandal back to the stage—featuring dancers who, beneath their skirts, reveal glittering vaginas studded with Swarovski crystals. It also stars Tom Erik Lie as Jupiter, the king of the gods, who goes astray in queer romantic escapades (in the guise of a fly).
