With *Mille et Une Nuits*, Iranian choreographer Sorour Darabi presents their first opera—an immersive performance that gives space to the voices that have been marginalized by ancient myths. The German premiere of Darabi’s opera simultaneously marks the launch of the new series *wielding fissures – carving cracks in the surface of the now* at Radialsystem. *Mille et Une Nuits* examines *One Thousand and One Nights* from the perspective of its narrator, Scheherazade. The original work—conceived by a heterosexual cis man—has often been criticized for reducing the character of Scheherazade to the status of a mere narrative device, banishing her body, her desires, and her subjectivity into the shadows of the stories themselves for the sake of the author. At the heart of Darabi’s opera, therefore, the night serves not merely as a metaphor for storytelling, but as a space where Scheherazade’s true essence can finally blossom—as a queer myth, far removed from the constraints of a cis-heteronormative world.
