A pirate radio broadcast in the restricted zone of the GDR transmits Sinti voices at night. Inside the station, a secret transmission takes shape over the years. Conversations, songs and fragmented memories layer upon one another. Whilst outside, the restricted zone and the death strip characterise the landscape along the inner-German border, a radio transmission develops that never became part of the official archives.

‘Midnight. Broadcast from the Restricted Zone’ is a lyrical drama about the realities of Sinti life in East Germany during the Cold War. The production is based on interviews, archive material and family memories, from which documentary and poetic-fictional scenes are developed. From voices, sound and archive material emerges a theatrical evening about resistance, community and memory.
