March 1988, 10:30 p.m., Charité Psychiatric Clinic in East Berlin: A young woman holds a syringe to a nurse’s throat. “I am a woman, aren’t I? Or what do you think?” she had asked on her first day on the ward. Now three police officers and a chief physician stand at the door of her room. The doctor does not document her answer. Nor does she document whether the young woman is using the needle to resist or to seek revenge, whether she wants retribution, chaos, or the answer to her question.
