For decades, the fear of losing custody was part of the reality of life for many mothers in lesbian* relationships – in both divided and reunified Berlin. This research project is dedicated to examining the history of this previously little-known form of discrimination.

As part of the event series “Sichtbar werden” (Becoming Visible), historians Dr. Kirsten Plötz and Maria Bühner will present background information, research approaches, and initial findings, and hope to engage in dialogue with the lesbian* queer community in Berlin. Together, we want to talk about historical continuities, social conditions, and current perspectives.
