New Perspectives on Opera Subjects

What connects Richard Wagner with a drag queen? Shlomi Moto Wagner—aka Mazy Mazeltov—is an actor, performer, and founder of the Berlin-based cultural collective House of Mazeltov, which operates at the intersection of queer performance, Jewish cultural work, and urban political activism. This season, Shlomi Moto Wagner appears as the narrator in Milo Rau’s new production of *The Flying Dutchman*—a role created specifically for him. As the host of this salon, Shlomi Moto Wagner presents excerpts from his acclaimed solo show *Richard Wagner – The Drag Queen*, inviting the audience to an evening that bridges the worlds of the opera house and the ballroom. The program features lip-syncs set to Wagner’s music, live arias performed by ensemble members, queer readings, and Wagner’s letters to his milliner, alongside an exploration of antisemitism in opera that is as entertaining as it is uncompromising. It is an evening that takes Wagner as he was—and spits him back out as he could be.

Deutsche Oper

A good 100 years ago, in the then still independent area of Charlottenburg, the Deutsche Oper was founded in the name of modern music theater, offering full visibility of the stage from every seat. The opera house stayed true to this tradition of citizenry when Fritz Bornemann's new building opened in 1961.
