«Willibrord Haas, born in Schramberg in the Black Forest in 1936, grew up in a family with a strong artistic background. After completing his secondary education in Wangen im Allgäu, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he became a master student. He turned away from portrait painting early on and found his true form of expression in abstract art – as a counterworld to reality and a manifestation of his credo ‘Never again war – at least not in the realm of my art.’

Haas has lived and worked in Berlin since the 1960s. In addition to his work as a painter, he was also active in the theatre, where he developed his distinctive visual language in small-format watercolours and later in large-format works, graphics and print cycles. Numerous exhibitions and publications accompanied his artistic work.

Despite personal losses, art always remained a source of strength and new beginnings for Haas – a medium of peace and joie de vivre.»
