Opera in one act
The libretto for this extraordinary masterpiece, set to music by the young Erich Wolfgang Korngold, was written in 1916 by gay playwright Hans Müller-Einigen. Now this play about forbidden desire in Renaissance Venice comes to the Berlin stage with Laura Wilde (photo) in the title role. A continuation of the house’s series of Korngold rediscoveries.

A good 100 years ago, in the then still independent area of Charlottenburg, the Deutsche Oper was founded in the name of modern music theater, offering full visibility of the stage from every seat. The opera house stayed true to this tradition of citizenry when Fritz Bornemann's new building opened in 1961.
