Between 1944 and 1945, approximately 1,100 women from the Ravensbrück concentration camp were exploited as forced laborers by Daimler-Benz Motoren GmbH in Ludwigsfelde. At the Genshagen subcamp, they were forced to manufacture aircraft engines. For the most part, they lived in the cellar beneath the assembly hall; many of them saw no daylight during this period. Their work shifts lasted up to 30 hours.
The cellar of Hall 24 still exists today. A 2022 survey uncovered handmade plates and other personal belongings of the concentration camp prisoners. A real estate developer has acquired the site and plans to build there.
Through our walking tours, we aim to draw attention to this threatened site and share knowledge about its history. The walk to the site takes approximately 10 minutes. We recommend wearing long trousers and closed-toe shoes, as the route involves uneven terrain and walking through undergrowth.
We will meet on the train platform serving the direction of Ludwigsfelde/Luckenwalde/Jüterbog. It is possible to travel together from Berlin on the RE 3 train departing Berlin-Südkreuz station at 13:46.
We are meeting at 2 p.m. at Birkengrund station, which will serve as the starting point.
