Reading, performance and discussion
"There is still room for improvement—upward—when it comes to democracy; and downward, too." How is the patriarchy inscribed within political and cultural history? What weight did—and do—women’s voices carry within it? Did Greek tragedy truly depict the founding of democracy—or did it not, rather, seal the consolidation of the patriarchy with its assistance, yet without the participation of women? This is the question the Daughters of the Oresteia ask themselves. And so, they resolve to reopen the case—this time, in a truly democratic fashion: "I want out of these borrowed quotes, out of this old male history." (Electra) The *Daughters of the Oresteia*—they are the daughters who were cast out of the play, killed, sacrificed, and murdered. With venomous rage, they put history on trial—a history that follows a pure logic of war—along with the men, the gods, and even themselves; and with those who wrote it, having omitted everything that concerned them. It is a reckoning that leaves nothing unsaid—until everything has been voiced, until the gaps are filled, until they can see one another—and truly look at one another. And proceed to the trial. Writer and playwright Maxi Obexer explores these questions in her new play, Die Töchter der Oresteia (The Daughters of the Oresteia); we look forward to a reading followed by a discussion!
