New staging
Aviel Cahn, the new artistic director of the Deutsche Oper, is launching his first season with the highly controversial, antisemitic composer Richard Wagner. He has commissioned Milo Rau—whose work (such as *Queer Utopia*) frequently addresses LGBTIQ* themes and homophobia—to stage Wagner’s Romantic opera of redemption, *The Flying Dutchman*. Breaking with all convention and Berlin performance traditions, Rau has introduced a narrator role for Shlomi Moto Wagner—alias Mazy Mazeltov, founder of the Berlin cultural collective House of Mazeltov. Shlomi Moto Wagner was most recently seen in the show *Richard Wagner – The Drag Queen*.
Tomasz Konieczny sings the title role, and Giedrė Šlekytė conducts.

A good 100 years ago, in the then still independent area of Charlottenburg, the Deutsche Oper was founded in the name of modern music theater, offering full visibility of the stage from every seat. The opera house stayed true to this tradition of citizenry when Fritz Bornemann's new building opened in 1961.
